Trackers are sensitive to operational change. A shift in source mix, invitation timing or device experience can move results even when the market itself has not changed.
Document the fieldwork system
Comparable waves require more than the same questionnaire. Record source allocation, quotas, launch windows, incidence, conversion and completion patterns. This creates the context needed to interpret unexpected movement.
Change deliberately
No source plan remains perfect forever. Panels evolve, audiences become more difficult and new markets enter scope. When change is required, introduce it carefully and measure its effect rather than silently replacing supply.
- Define an expected source mix before launch
- Use controlled overlap when adding sources
- Compare quality and composition by source
- Keep stakeholders informed of material changes
Consistency is a research decision
The goal is not operational rigidity. It is to ensure that changes in the data reflect the audience as much as possible—not unnoticed changes in how respondents were reached.

Audience, markets and timing are enough to start. If something in the design needs a rethink, we’ll explain why.
